Cloisonné vaas Gu
Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Vase in Archaistic Gu Form
A striking Chinese cloisonné enamel vase inspired by the forms and ornament of ancient Chinese ritual bronzes.
The elegant gu-shaped vessel has a tall flared neck, rounded central body and spreading foot. It is decorated with richly coloured enamel panels in turquoise blue, deep red, cream and dark blue, set against an unusual black ground.
The central decorative band features highly stylised archaic animal and taotie-inspired motifs, while the upper and lower sections are covered with an intricate spiral and scroll pattern. The vase is further enhanced by two sculptural side handles with stylised animal-head terminals.
The combination of the black ground and contrasting turquoise, red and cream enamels gives this piece a particularly strong and sophisticated appearance.
The gu form derives from ancient Chinese ritual bronze vessels, while later cloisonné artists frequently recreated these archaic shapes and decorative motifs. Comparable Chinese cloisonné gu-shaped vessels are documented in major auction collections. Sothebys.com
